Partial Discharge

AQ specialises in PD measurement and detection solutions for a variety of equipment including GIS and ODSE terminations, Transformers (terminations and core) and EHV joints both with and without integrated sensors.

Partial Discharge Services for Commissioning

If required for commissioning tests, PD measurement can be carried out at GIS, ODSE and Transformer terminations through a variety of means - the most viable methods depend mostly on accessibility & the electrical environment (in terms of ambient RF noise and energised adjacent circuits.)

If present, the integrated capacitive PD sensors found in switchgear or added to cables post-installation will be used as they consistently provide the clearest results. Otherwise, either capacitive sensors or inductive sensors will be deployed.

For measurement on cables at joint bays, joint-integrated sensors provide the clearest results. If these integrated sensors are not present, inductive sensors are deployed at the link boxes.

Partial Discharge Services for Energised Circuits

PD measurement on energised circuit accessories provides advance warning of breakdowns and accessory degredation. Routine measurements can add greatly to the reliability of circuits and prevent unexpected outages.

PD measurement on energised circuits requires no outages. Inductive and capacitive sensors are again deployed as appropriate. Energised circuits benefit greatly from a the presence of a stable AC waveform with no corona so few problems are encountered during the analysis.

PD Contracts and Experience

2008-2009: ABB - Qatar National Distribution Network - Phase 7 Expansion, 220 & 400KV

As the only company based in Qatar to offer PD measurement in-house, AQ was commissioned by ABB to perform PD measurement as part of the commissioning tests on a variety of 400KV and 220KV circuits in Qatar. The national utility's requirement for PD measurement on these circuits clearly indicates the perceived value of PD measurement in terms of preventing future outages and accessory degredation.

Measurements were taken on ODSE, Transformer and GIS terminations using mostly capacitive sensors (with some inductive) and 3-phase simultanous energisation via the AQ Resonant HV Test Set.

Results were overwelmingly positive with all terminations showing no PD activity and the background noise floor being well below the measurement requirement.

2008-2009: Siemens - Qatar National Distribution Network - Phase 7 Expansion, 220KV

AQ was commissioned by Siemens to perform PD measurement as part of the commissioning tests on a variety of transformer-to-GIS internal 220KV circuits in Qatar.

Measurements were taken on Transformer and GIS terminations using capacitive sensors and generally 3-phase simultanous energisation via the AQ Resonant HV Test Set, with some circuits being tested phase-by-phase. GIS and Transformer measurements were taken simultaneously in all cases.

Results were overwelmingly positive with all terminations showing no PD activity and the background noise floor being well below the measurement requirement.

December 2008: Saudi Cable Company - Qatar

AQ was commissioned by the Saudi Cable Company to perform PD measurements on a feeder of approximately 6KM length comprising 13 joints of Brugg manufacture, terminated into Siemens GIS.

Measurements were taken at each joint bay using the integrated PD sensors in the Brugg joint.

Measurements were taken at the GIS using the integrated sensors of capacitive design.

Results were positive and the Brugg sensors performed well, with little or no external noise being present in the signal taken from the joint.
